A Geofeed Line at a Glance

Every line has the same five fields, in this order. The postal code is deprecated, so the generator leaves it empty.

FieldWhat goes in itExampleRequired
ip_prefixOne IP address, or a block in CIDR notation, IPv4 or IPv6192.0.2.0/24Yes
alpha2codeThe country, a two-letter ISO 3166-1 codeGBNo
regionThe region, an ISO 3166-2 code that starts with the countryGB-ENGNo
cityThe city name, plain text with no commaLondonNo
postal_codeDeprecated: new feeds should leave it empty–No

The format is RFC 8805. What a geofeed is explains it in full.

Publish It in Three Steps

A geofeed only works once the providers can find it.

  1. Host the fileat an HTTPS address you control, and keep it up to date as the addresses move.
  2. Point to it from the registry. In the RIPE Database add a geofeed: attribute with that address to the inetnum or inet6num of each block.
  3. Wait for the providers. They fetch the file on their own schedule and decide how far to trust it. How IP geolocation works and how to correct it lists the main ones.

Geofeed Questions

What is a geofeed?

A geofeed is a plain text file in which the holder of a block of IP addresses publishes where it is: the country, region and city. Geolocation providers read it and correct their databases from the source. What a geofeed is explains it in full.

Does this generator send what I type anywhere?

No. The checks and the file are made in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to us or to anyone else.

Where do I put the file once I have it?

Host it at an HTTPS address you control, then add that address to the geofeed: attribute of the inetnum (IPv4) or inet6num (IPv6) object of the block in the RIPE Database. The geolocation providers read the address from the database and fetch the file themselves.

Why is there no postal code field?

RFC 8805 deprecates the postal code, and says specific postal codes must not be published without the consent of the people they locate. The file keeps the field empty, so every line still has the five fields the format describes.

Can one block sit inside another?

Yes. RFC 8805 permits nested prefixes, and a provider uses the most specific line for an address, so a /25 can have its own city inside a /24. The same block twice is an error, and the generator flags it.

Where do the regions come from?

The region list is the ISO 3166-2 list of subdivisions for the country you chose, such as GB-ENG or DE-BE, taken from the Debian iso-codes project. You choose the region, you do not type it, and a feed you paste in is checked against the same list. The list is the ISO 3166-2 data of the Debian iso-codes release 4.20.1 (January 2026), and a code that is not in that list is refused, whatever an older feed used.

What does the Last updated line mean?

It is the time, in UTC, when the file was made, written in the usual form such as 2026-10-26T13:42:16Z. Change it whenever you change the file, which is what this generator does each time you edit a line.
